After meeting an accident while driving on the road

September 25, 2010 By: johngraham Category: Auto, business No Comments →

It is important to get as much information as possible, if you met or involved in accident. At the time of accident many times it may happen that we are not in a state to gather the information but at a later date as soon as you can provide the information. This will help your claim and assist your insurance company get the best possible result at a later date.

If you meet to an accident and you are unable to get out of your car or it’s not safe to try carry on your seat belt safe, turn on your hazard lights. If you able to drive your car and are in a dangerous spot or which leads to blocking traffic, find a protected and legal place to park your car for e.g. shoulder of a highway or a parking lot. It’s illegal to move your car from the scene of an accident in some states, though. Ask your driving instructor what the law is in your state for driving practical test.

Information to gather at the time of accident (if possible):

  • Whether the parties were using headlights and/or indicator lights.
  • Vehicle details including make, model, registration number, colour, any modifications and the number of passengers in each vehicle.
  • Time and date.
  • If you have a camera, take some photographs of the accident scene.
  • Contact details including names, addresses and telephone numbers of drivers, passengers and pedestrians involved. If a party is driving within the course of his employment, take both the driver and the employer’s details. It may be worth noting a description of the driver, location and any distinguishing features.
  • Insurance details for the driver of the other vehicle.
  • The weather, visibility and lighting conditions, including street lighting.
  • Name, “collar number” and force details of any police officer attending and other emergency services details if appropriate.
  • Identify the damage to each vehicle involved.
  • Identify any injuries to persons involved.

Useful information to jot down at the time or after the accident

  • Estimated speed of the vehicles involved.
  • A description of the scene of the accident, including any relevant road markings, signals and obstructions.
  • A full description of what happened including sketches of the vehicles positioning.
  • The type of road.

Reporting

  • The company may decline to insure you if you have not notified them of the accident within the time period set out in the policy. Inform your insurance company of the accident as quickly as possible.
  • It’s an crime to decline to give information to the other driver following an accident, if there has been damage or property harm.

For protection and security DSA government has introduced the hazard perception test:

Hazard perception test has been introduced in the driving theory test. Hazard perception test plays a very vital role as it helps in reducing number of deaths on the roads. While driving there are some hazards to which driver come across such as huge vehicles moving over to your side of the road, loose pets and farmyard animals, change in the traffic movement and volume, junctions and roundabouts, horse riders, weather conditions of the day, road surfaces, parked vehicles, hidden junctions & turns. It helps the new driver unfairly involved in accidents, generally in the first months after passing their driving test.

A driver has to face all this obstacles and has to come out of all this very smoothly and make his own way. In this pattern of driving theory test you will be shown 14 hazard video clips on the computer screen which will be of one minute each. You have to watch these clips as if you are the driver. There will be at least one hazard in each clip means totally you have to find 15 hazards. All together one clip will have two hazards.

Driving theory test: Test pattern and touch screen system

June 10, 2010 By: johngraham Category: Advertising No Comments →

There are two parts to the theory test: the multiple-choice test and the
hazard perception test. Both are required to be taken and passed in the same session in order to attain a theory test certificate, which can then be used to book the practical driving test within two years of the theory pass.

  • Multiple choice question :
  • In this part of the theory test has 50 multiple choice questions and the examinee must answer at least 43 of them correctly to pass in 57 mins.For lorry and bus drivers, 100 questions are asked over a 115-minute period, and 85 out of 100 must be answered correctly to pass.

  • Hazard perception part:

In this part of the theory test there are 14 hazard video clips of approximately one minute each. In this examinee have to watch these clips as a driver. There will be 15 hazard to find – at least one on each clip. However, one clip will have 2 hazards.
The pass mark for this part of the test is 44 out of 75 for car drivers and motorcycle riders.Those taking LGV or PCV (lorry or bus) tests must score at least 50 out of 75.
Multiple-choice test uses the touch screen system to mark the correct answers.

What is touch screen-A touch screen is an electronic visual display that can identify the existence and position of a touch within the display area. The term in general refers to touching the display of the device with a finger or hand. Touch screens can also sense other inactive objects, such as a stylus. On the other hand, if the thing sensed is active, as with a light pen, the term touch screen is usually not relevant.

The touch screen has two main attributes -

First, it enables one to cooperate directly with what is displayed, rather than indirectly with a cursor controlled by a mouse or touchpad.Secondly, it lets one do so without requiring any intermediate device that would need to
be held in the hand.

Touch screen in driving test :

  • To take online theory test for driving theory test examinees use touch screen computer system.
  • Touch screen is preferred because it is easy to use or user friendly and has been carefully designed
  • Examinees can also work through a practice session for up to 15 minutes to get used to the system before actually starting their test.
  • To answer a question the examinee simply touches his choice of answer from the listed answers on the computer screen.
  • During examination if an examinee faces any problem or finds difficult to use the new system staff will be on hand to help them
  • The system has been carefully designed so that examinees that are color blind can use it.
  • The system has the option for dyslexic examinees to listen to the test being read in English through a headset. People with dyslexia can also apply to have up to doubled the standard time for the multiple choice part of the test. This accommodation must be
    arranged at the time of booking. Supporting documents such as a letter from your GP or teacher will be required.
  • The examinee is allowed to go back to a question at any time and can also flag questions they are unsure of in order to find and return to it quickly and easily later.

Driving test changes from Oct 2010 with new element introduced as independent driving test

May 27, 2010 By: johngraham Category: Auto, Education No Comments →

Independent driving element in driving test will come in effect from Oct 2010.

* What is an independent driving test:

Independent driving is tasking the candidate to drive for approximately 10 mins either following a series of directions, following traffic signs, or a combination of both.

Independent driving is when the learner get out on the road He/She will be driving alone and they need to know how to drive safely. Simultaneously it is very important for a learner to look at the signs at the time of driving because that’s in normal life what the learners are going to do. It actually puts theory test and practical test together. It makes you think about the signs, makes you think independently and makes you feel much more confident.

For more information visit: http://www.theory-test.co.uk/asp/independent-driving-test.asp

* Why independent driving will be introduced:

“The feasibility of introducing independent driving into the GB driving test” was studied and according to it, there are few situations which demand this element in driving test. Statistics on the accident risk of new drivers shows that after passing their test they are at their peak in terms of their risk of having an accident. A number of reviews have concluded that traditional driver training does not seem to have any positive effect on road safety in terms of accident reductions.

One interpretation of these findings is that the experience gained by drivers after passing their test is completely unlike the experience they gain Pre-Test. Findings from qualitative research on the perceptions of new drivers seems to support this; in focus groups learner drivers expressed their belief that ‘real driving’ is fundamentally different from the training required to pass the driving test.

A number of authors have suggested however that driver training should not only focus on vehicle control skills but also on factors that have been shown to be related to accident reductions, according to the research evidence. This includes higher perceptual skills such as

* Hazard perception
* Safer attitudes towards risk
* Better self-awareness of one’s driving ability.

Post-Test experience seems crucial for reducing accident liability, it is theoretically possible that if the relevant elements of post-test experience can be identified and trained pre-test then driver training may be better placed that it is currently to reduce post-test accident risk. An existing example of this approach in GB driver training is the introduction of a video-based measure of hazard perception skill in 2002 as part of the driving theory test.

For more information visit: http://www.theory-test.co.uk/asp/default.asp

Once learner passes the test, the thing they struggle to deal with is not having the person sitting next to them to guide them around when they need it. Sudden introduction of the extra elements of having to read traffic signs, road markings, or possibly having passengers or music in the car, made it more difficult for learner.

Possible solutions for safer new drivers may be a -

* Tracker fitted to their vehicle to monitor speed
* Vehicle handling
* Maybe reducing insurance costs
* Limit passengers
* Plates compulsory
* Limit engine size
* 40 hours supervised driving
* Compulsory pass plus or motorway driving.

All for the first 2 years they are insured, not from when the test is passed.

* Independent driving test examination:

On the independent driving test you have to do two maneuvers. However, when the new test starts, you may only have to do ONE maneuver. The test duration may also be increased to allow extra time for Independent Driving, and this will result in an increase in the test fee. You will still need to practice all the maneuvers because the Examiner on the day will decide which one you should do.
The whole thrust of independent driving is to prepare yourself for the real world.

DSA driving test – know the typical user queries related to the hazard perception test

May 19, 2010 By: johngraham Category: Auto No Comments →

Its been found that, even after passing the driving test, learner drivers are involved into the road accidents disproportionately, especially in the first months.

Hence, it is important to take hazard perception training to improve hazard perception skills of the learner drivers. And also to become a safe driver minimizing the road accidents risks.

Here are few typical hazard test related queries which can help to know the exam better.

There are loads of informative pages available on the internet about the hazard perception test scoring mechanism etc. But usually a learner driver fails to understand the typical problems, other drivers also face.

Q1. Hazard Perception test not fair, I am experienced driver?

Although being experienced driver, I failed this part of the driving test. While practicing I can pass every time getting above passing mark. But in actual examination, I failed 2 times so far. I have spent more than GBP 100 already. Any advice to pass hazard perception test would be appreciated.

Q2. How to pass hazard test?

I am not sure about the way hazard test scoring mechanism works. Can someone explain terminologies like potential hazard, developing hazard, developed hazard, scoring window. I have my test next week and still not sure about hazard test. Please help. As I find this as difficult part of the test.

Q3. What types of hazards I look for in hazard clips?

I always see more than 2-3 hazards per clip. Should I click for all of them? Also can I click anywhere on the screen or do I have to click on the hazard itself. Please let me know any good websites to practice hazard perception test clips. Also any tips on passing hazard test on first attempt would be appreciated.

Q4. I failed my hazard perception part of driving theory test due to too many clicks. Can someone explain this?

Q5. Does the hazard clips have voice over. I can not hear when hazard clip is playing. Is there voice over.

All above and similar queries are answered on different websites.

All you need to:

  • Know the terminologies related to the driving test
  • Know driving theory examination process
  • Know hazard test scoring mechanism
  • Know the pass marks
  • Go through some few hints and tips
  • Know the penalizing points

Appearing for driving theory test – Wait and read this!!!

May 04, 2010 By: johngraham Category: Auto, Education No Comments →

Passing your driving theory test is your first step towards being a safe driver on the road. You need to know few things before you appear for the driving theory test

Minimum ages and rules:

You can take your driving theory test once your provisional licence becomes valid. Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday.

So, if you apply for your provisional licence before you are 17 you will still have to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test.

Disability living allowance :

If you are receiving disability living allowance at the higher rate your provisional licence will come into effect when you are 16, but you can apply for it within three months of your 16th birthday.

Motorcyclists direct access scheme:

Direct access is a scheme, which allows a person over the age of 21 to avoid the two year/25 kW restriction by taking a test on a machine of at least 35 kW (46.6 bhp). A pass allows you to ride any size of bike. Any instruction given on a machine that exceeds the normal learner motorcycle specification must be supervised at all times by a certified motorcycle instructor who should be in radio contact. You should also wear fluorescent or reflective clothing and follow all other provisional licence restrictions.

Accelerated access :

Riders who reach the age of 21, while still within the two year period where they are restricted to maximum 25 kW (33 bhp) machines, but who wish to ride larger bikes need to pass a further test on a motorcycle of at least 35 kW (46.6 bhp). They may practise on bikes over 25 kW (33 bhp) under the same practice conditions for direct access riders. You will revert to learner status while practising (on a motorcycle greater than 25 kW (33 bhp) although test failure will not affect your existing licence.

Mopeds and tractors:

If you want to ride a moped you can take your theory test when you are 16, but again you must make sure you have a valid provisional licence. If you are 16 and already have a provisional licence for an agricultural vehicle or a moped, this will give you provisional entitlement to drive a car when you are 17.

Rules for learner drivers : Before you start to drive, you must:

  • Hold a valid, provisional driving licence for Great Britain or Northern Ireland
  • Make sure that any vehicle you drive is roadworthy and properly taxed and insured
  • If you want to practise your driving with an accompanying driver, the accompanying driver must be over the age of 21 and must have held (and still hold) a full licence for three years.
  • As a learner driver, you must display ‘L’ plates (‘L’ or ‘D’ plates in Wales) in a conspicuous position on the front and rear of the vehicle you are driving.
  • You’re limited to less powerful motorbikes.

Apply for provisional license :

If you have never held a driving licence before you will need to apply for a provisional licence. You cannot start to drive a car until your provisional driving licence has been accepted and in your possession.

Driving theory test: must-have learning resources:

Preparing for your theory test is essential if you want to become a safe, responsible driver or rider. If you are a learner driver, you must take and pass your theory test before you book your practical test. The theory test is a computer based test and can be taken at various tests centres around the country.

Eco-safe driving and riding as part of the driving test

April 28, 2010 By: johngraham Category: Education No Comments →

Eco-safe driving and riding as part of the practical driving test

From 10 September 2008, if you’re sitting a driving test, you’ll also be assessed on your ability to drive or ride in a way that shows eco-safe driving techniques.

This assessment is not part of the existing assessment criteria for the practical test and you will not fail your test because you don’t demonstrate eco-safe driving techniques.

Visit : http://www.pass-test.co.uk/common/frm_product_info.aspx

The driving examiner will assess control and planning, and at the end of the test will give you feedback, as guidance, on how efficiently you’re driving.

Control
Always try to use the vehicle controls as smoothly as possible, with particular attention to:

• starting and moving away
• accelerating
• using gears
• driving at an appropriate speed

This reduces wear and tear on your vehicle and will help in reducing CO2.

Planning
Reduce harmful emissions by anticipating road traffic conditions and acting in good time, rather than reacting to them at the last moment, especially:

• showing hazard awareness and planning
• making use of engine braking
• stopping the engine when appropriate
• Tips for ‘eco-safe’ driving and riding

Follow these tips as a guide to safe driving or riding for economy:

• Check your tyres regularly and keep at recommended pressure
• Don’t carry unnecessary weight
• Remove roof-rack or luggage boxes when not needed to reduce air resistance
• Don’t exceed speed limits, accelerate gently
• Consider using cruise control where it would be appropriate
•Turn off your engine if you’re likely to have a prolonged wait
• Use air conditioning only when you need to
• Plan your route to avoid known congestion points
• Try to travel during off-peak times

Be conscious about hazard perception test, theory test

April 14, 2010 By: johngraham Category: Advertising No Comments →

In Great Britain theory test is administered by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and in Northern Ireland by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA).

The car and motorcycle theory test lasts 57 minutes and involves answering 50 multiple-choice questions about a wide range of & driving topics, such as car or bike mechanics, the Highway Code and driving law. 43 of the 50 questions must be answered correctly in order to pass. For lorries and buses 60 questions are asked over a 70 minute period in which 51 out of 60 must be answered correctly to pass.

It is immediately followed by a hazard perception test. Having passed these two exams, a certificate is issued, which can then be used to book the practical driving test within two years of the theory pass. It is necessary to pass all three parts, theory, hazard perception and practical, in order to obtain a driving license.

The theory test was last revised on the 3rd September 2007 to include 50 questions (with a pass mark of 43), instead of the previous 35.

Hazard perception test

Examinees watch fourteen one-minute clips filmed from the perspective of a car driver and have to indicate, usually by clicking a mouse button or touching the screen, when they observe a developing hazard. All of the clips will include one developing hazard, and one will include two such hazards.

The sooner an examinee reacts to a developing hazard, the more points are scored, from five down to one, with no score if the examinee reacts too late. The maximum score possible is 75.For the purposes of the test, a “developing hazard is defined as something which requires the driver to adjust speed and/or direction. Potential hazards are hazards that no immediate action needs to be taken, but are worth observing in case their status changes.

Clicking on potential hazards is acceptable, but the scoring window only opens if that hazard develops, thus examinees have to remember to react if the status of a hazard changes, and not just when the potential hazard is first spotted.

The hazard perception test and the theory test are taken together and must both be passed in the same sitting for the applicant to become elligible to take the practical driving test in order to obtain a full driving licence.

Practical driving test

A practical driving test is a test which United Kingdom learner drivers must pass to obtain a driving licence. Different tests are available for users of different vehicles, from car drivers, to motorcyclists and HGV drivers. In Great Britain it is administered by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) and in Northern Ireland by the Driver & Vehicle Agency (DVA). It is necessary to have passed a UK driving theory test and a UK hazard perception test before sitting this exam. Passing this test then entitles one to hold a full UK driving licence.

Practical driving test format

The practical test is taken on the road, with the examiner directing the candidate around a pre-determined (but unknown to the candidate) route. The examiner marks the candidate for driving faults (commonly called minor faults or minors), serious faults, and dangerous faults (collectively referred to as major faults or majors). A candidate will fail the test if he or she accumulates any major faults, or more than fifteen minors.

If a candidate acquires several (three or more) driving faults in the same category, the examiner may consider the fault a recurring and dangerous habit and mark a serious fault in that category. The test usually lasts 30 to 48 minutes in a standard test, or one hour when the candidate is taking a test after having their licence revoked.

Feature of theory test

  • Driving theory test questions will increase
  • No. of questions in the exam currently 35 will increase to 50
  • Pass mark will be 43
  • Allotted time to complete test will be 57 min

Recognition of available clues and perception of danger are skills that are necessary in all drivers and riders, irrespective of the vehicle used. For this reason, the same version of the hazard perception test is used for all categories of test.
