South Florida Photographer Rob Witzel Honored By Leading International Photojournalist Association
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Rob Witzel, Deputy Director of Photography for the Gainesville Sun and Photo Editor of Gainesville Magazine, was the top rated photographer from the United States in this year’s Wedding Photojournalist Association’s Photographer of the Year competition. Witzel received the most overall points of any U.S. photographer in four quarterly contests and one additional contest sponsored by Brides Magazine. The competition was judged by leading photojournalists and news photo editors from around the world.
The Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) is an international, membership-based organization representing professional photographers dedicated to documenting weddings and events in a candid, unobtrusive style. Qualified members must exhibit industry-leading technical skill, creativity, visual artistry and business integrity.
Witzel is a native Floridian and second-generation wedding photographer. He received his degree in photojournalism from the University of Florida. His work has appeared in The New York Times, Boston Globe, USA Today, Miami Herald, Los Angeles Times, US News and World Report and Time Magazine. Prior awards include William Randolph Hearst National Champion (2002); two New York Times Punch Awards (2003, 2007); Southern Photographer of the Year (2003); WPJA First Place Humor, Second Place Reception, Second Place Details, Third Place Vendors, and Ninth Place Reception, all in 2008.
