The DSA has revised the motorcycle driving practical test from May 2009. The aim of the new test is to improve the standard

of the skill and road safety of motorcycle and moped riders. This group amongst all users of the road faces the highest risk

of injury or death, particularly in the case for young and inexperienced riders.

The motorcycle driving test is made up of two parts; the multiple choice part and the hazard perception part. The first part

is the multiple choice part consisting of 50 questions. This section is designed to test your understanding of the theory

behind driving. You need to get 43 questions right out of 50 and the time limit is 57 minutes.

The second part is the Hazard perception test . This section is designed to test your awareness of potential hazards whilst

driving. You will be shown 14 clips of 1 minute each having 15 hazards in all (1 clip will have 2 hazards). The test is for

75 marks (5 marks / hazard) and pass marks are 44.

If you pass one part and fail the other you will fail the whole theory test, and need to take both parts again. Once you have

passed the motorcycle theory test only then you can apply to take the practical driving test .

The standard fee for the Motorcycle Theory test is £31.00.

The standard motorcycle test fee for both modules is £80.00 on weekdays and £92.00 on weekends.

Following items are a must when you are appearing for both modules 1 and 2 of your motorcycle test . If you do not, the DSA

What will the motorcycle test include?
The new test will be completed in two modules. The following specified manoeuvres conducted at specific speeds will be tested

in module 1 on safe off-road sites.

1. At least two manoeuvres carried out at slow speed, including slalom

2. At least two manoeuvres carried out at higher speed, out of which one exercise needs to be completed in second or third

gear, at a speed of at least 30 km/h (approx. 19 mph) and one exercise which would involve an obstacle at a minimum speed of

50 km/h (approx. 32 mph)

3. At least two braking manoeuvres, which will include an emergency brake at a minimum speed of 50 km/h (approx. 32 mph)

On the day of your module 1 test, you will be asked by the examiner to demonstrate the riding ability on either the left-hand

or right-hand circuit. The layout may differ due to local conditions.

If your riding skills in Module 1 indicate a dangerously incompetent level, you might not be allowed to take module 2.

If you pass module 1 you will receive a test pass certificate which you must bring with you when you take module 2.

Module 2 of the test is made up of the eyesight test, road safety questions and at least 30 minutes of road riding. Road

riding will cover a variety of road and traffic conditions and will also include normal stops, hill and angle starts.
