Hong Kong — Asian hedge fund veterans said at a recent Opalesque Roundtable that looking back over the last 10 or 15 years “about all Asian investors at that time had absolutely no interest in hedge funds, in fact they thought they were very bad or illegal products”.

Then the Asian financial crisis of 1997/98 made people realize that long-only leveraged equities or property were not necessarily the best asset classes, so they started to be interested in structured products or hedged vehicles. MARANELLO, Italy — RM Auctions, in association with Sotheby’s made history at the Ferrari factory in Maranello today as a 1957 Ferrari 250 TR, chassis no. 0714TR sold for euro 9,020,000 at the third-annual Ferrari Leggenda e Passione event to set a new world record for the most expensive motor car ever to be sold at auction.

Returning to its Maranello birthplace for its auction debut, the euro 9,020,000 sale price represents euro 1,980,000 more than the previous auction world record which was set at the same sale last year.

“The historical significance of this car attracted a bidding war as collectors from around the world – both in the room and on the telephone – competed to secure one of the most alluring and iconic of all Ferrari racing cars,” said Max Girardo, Managing Director of RM Europe.

“The eyes of the world were watching today’s sale as cars of this quality are so rarely offered to the market. The rarity and the provenance of the Testa Rossa speaks for itself and the price we achieved today is testament to that. We are delighted with the result the car achieved today,” he added.

The beautiful and immediately recognizable Scaglietti-designed ‘pontoon-fender’ 250 TR was produced from 1957 to 1958 during which only 22 examples were constructed. The Ferrari 250 TRs entered 19 international championship races from 1958 through 1961 emerging with 10 victories and earning them legendary status among discerning collectors, as well as the honor of being one of the most desirable and competitive racing Ferraris ever built.

0714TR was extensively campaigned in its day with significant finishes at the world’s most important racing events including the 1000 km Buenos Aires in January 1958.

The Ferrari Leggenda e Passione is the only auction of its kind dedicated to the Ferrari marque, held at the Maranello factory grounds and endorsed by the Ferrari factory.

CARLSBAD, Calif., — Owners of a leading hotel investment and ownership group today announced Dolce Hotels and Resorts as the new management company of the former Four Seasons Resort Aviara (“Aviara”), a luxury resort property in north San Diego County, California. Dolce expects to take over the management and administrative functions of the resort at 1 p.m. Monday, May 11. The property will be managed as an independent luxury resort.

The owner, Aviara Resort Associates, announced that it selected Dolce following the termination of Four Seasons from its position as manager of the Aviara resort – amid allegations that Four Seasons breached its fiduciary duties in connection with the 329-room luxury property. The case will be closely watched in the hotel and investment community, as hotel owners seek greater transparency and financial responsibility from the management companies with whom they associate.

“The owners terminated Four Seasons because they lost trust and confidence in its management of their resort,” says William A. Brewer, partner at Bickel & Brewer and lead counsel for the owner.

Owners terminated Four Seasons and the management agreement between the parties on March 29, 2009, but Four Seasons refused to acknowledge that termination – or relinquish control of the hotel property. A legal action was filed April 1 against Four Seasons in San Diego, seeking an injunction prohibiting Four Seasons from continuing to manage and operate the Aviara hotel. Also, the Owner has commenced arbitration proceedings against Four Seasons, seeking tens of millions of dollars in financial damages.

Dolce will now assume complete financial and managerial control of the resort. Employees are invited to meet with Dolce representatives to make arrangements for their continued employment at the resort.

AUSTIN, Texas, — Ross R. Moody, President of National Western Life Insurance Company, announced today first quarter 2009 consolidated net earnings of $15.0 million, or $4.26 per diluted Class A common share, compared with consolidated net earnings of $14.4 million, or $4.07 per diluted Class A common share, for the first quarter of 2008. The Company’s book value per share increased to $279.08.

Net earnings for the quarter ended March 31, 2009 included after-tax investment losses of $3.5 million, or $0.98 per diluted Class A share, substantially the result of other-than-temporary impairments on bond holdings. Mr. Moody indicated that the Company’s level of impairment losses were favorable given very difficult credit market conditions. “Just as we commented a few months ago regarding our 2008 results, National Western’s investment losses relative to its $6 billion investment portfolio have been minimal which is a validation of our well-managed investment guidelines and practices.”

After-tax earnings from operations, which exclude net realized investment losses, totaled $18.5 million ($5.24 per diluted Class A common share) for the quarter ended March 31, 2009, an increase of 28% from after-tax earnings from operations of $14.5 million ($4.08 per diluted Class A common share) reported in the first quarter of 2008.
