Opalesque Starts Premium Managed Futures Newsletter

February 12, 2009 By: Ub News Press Release Category: Insurance No Comments →

Opalesque, the world’s largest subscription-based publisher in the alternative investments area, has launched Opalesque Futures Intelligence to meet the needs of the managed futures industry and investors.
The idea for the publication came from members of this growing community, which includes commodity trading advisers, fund managers and investors. Industry experts agreed to contribute analysis, commentary and data. Despite the financial and economic turmoil, managed futures did exceptionally well in 2008 and will likely continue to be an attractive investment. Yet people often have misconceptions about this strategy.

Opalesque Futures offers sophisticated analysis and commentary to illuminate various aspects of managed futures and help people understand it better. It is a must-read for anyone interested in this area, whether as investor or as manager.

Published every two weeks, the newsletter includes insights from industry pioneers and original research by experienced practitioners. In the first issue, Martin Lueck talks about last year’s trades and this year’s prospects. Mr. Lueck, currently president and head of research at Aspect Capital, was one of the three founders of AHL, the long-running futures program that became the flagship of  Man Group.

Sol Waksman, the founder of Barclay Hedge and builder of the first database of commodity trading advisors, explains what’s behind the returns and how to approach managed futures investing.

Also in the first issue, Tim Merryman, a CTA, managed futures consultant and  Opalesque Futures editorial advisor, looks at the impact of having managed futures in a portfolio. Contributor Walt Gallwas argues for the benefits of separate accounts, especially in view of fraud and redemption risks.

Among the regular features are comparisons of CTA indexes and summaries of  recent regulatory developments and futures-related news. A special section mines different databases for the top managers.

The editor, Chidem Kurdas, has been writing about hedge funds since 2000. She has held positions as research analyst at Thomson Reuters, New York bureau chief at HedgeWorld and news editor at Infovest21. Earlier in her career she taught economics at Pennsylvania State University and published a book about technology investing.  She writes for a number of blogs and publications.

Opalesque Futures Intelligence (OFI) will be a venue for the managed futures industry and affiliated businesses, tracking the latest developments and presenting the views and concerns of industry people.

About Opalesque:

In 2003, with the publication of its daily Alternative Market Briefing, Opalesque successfully launched an information revolution in the hedge fund media space: “Opalesque changed the world by bringing transparency where there was opacity and by delivering an accurate professional reporting service.” – Nigel Blanchard, Culross. This hybrid financial news service, which combines proprietary industry news stories and filtered third party reports, has been credited by many industry insiders with delivering precise, accurate, and vital information to a notoriously guarded audience.

Each week, Opalesque publications are read by more than 610,000 industry professionals in over 130 countries.  Opalesque is the only daily hedge fund publisher which is actually read by the elite managers themselves (http://www.opalesque.com/op_testimonials.html).

ADHD And Driving: ADHD Medications Lower Risks of Teen Auto Accidents

February 11, 2009 By: Neelam Singh Category: Health/Medical/Fitness No Comments →

Ontario, Canada –”The use of ADHD medications improves the quality of driving for teens and young adults while significantly reducing the risk of accidents,” said Dr. Daniel Cox in a recent video podcast on www.ADHD.tv.

Cox, of the University of Virginia Health System, has been studying the effects of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)  medications and driving for many years.  He cites multiple studies based not only at the University of Virginia, but also those conducted at the University of South Carolina, Harvard and in the Netherlands.

ADHD is a disorder in which individuals experience impulsivity, hyperactivity as well as the inability to focus for any length on a task at hand.  Currently, statistics explain that approximately 5 to 7 percent of children and young adults in the United States have this problem.  That accounts for nearly two million individuals.  It also affects adults as well.

The specific periods when automobile accidents occur involving  teen and young adult drivers with the mental health disorder Cox explained to Dr. Kenny Handelman, child psychiatrist and ADHD advocate, are the summer months, the weekends and late in the evening.

“All these times correspond to those when individuals are least likely to be taking their ADHD medications,” Cox explained.

Automobile accidents are a concern for teen and young adults in general, but even more of a concern for those who have ADHD.  In the general adolescent population, Cox said, of all the females who die, 46 percent of them die because of a car accident.

Similarly, deaths among adolescent males due to car accidents account for 36 percent of the total deaths.  While Cox admits these statistics are shocking, he then cites statistics of drivers who have ADHD.

Those adolescents with ADHD, he told Handelman during the video podcast, are two to four times more likely to be in a collision, three times more likely to receive a citation and are six to eight times increased risk of having their driver’s licenses suspended due to multiple violations.

Cox said that his studies also revealed that when choosing medications for ADHD, those labeled as “long acting” actually do work better for many individuals.

For more information on the research, visit:  http://www.adhd.tv/adhd-and-driving-adhd-tv-episode-4/

One of the most common disorders of childhood, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is characterized by the symptoms of impulsivity, the inability to concentrate or focus on tasks at hand, as well as hyperactivity.

ADHD appears to be a growing global health problem, affecting as many as seven percent of the total childhood population worldwide.  Not only that, but more than 60 percent of these children continue to manage the disorder as they enter adulthood.

Dr. Kenny Handelman is a psychiatrist from Ontario Canada with a special interest in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.  In addition to founding www.ADHDWorld.com, he also has a blog, www.ADDADHDblog.com and is the host of an online video broadcast, www.adhd.tv.com.

MindTree Ltd. (NSE: MINDTREE), a global IT and R&D Services company, today announced the availability of its Spend Analysis Solution for the manufacturing industry. MindTree’s Spend Analysis Solution will now offer organizations in the manufacturing industry enhanced control and optimization of their procurement costs.

With sourcing accounting for up to 75 percent of the total cost base of typical manufacturing organizations, extracting the required intelligence out of spend data not only directly contributes to cost savings but also provides significant inputs for budgeting, planning and product strategies. Usage of these standardized technology components improves solution quality and significantly reduces the time-to-value for customers.

“With this solution, we hope to help our customers save costs via spend volume aggregation, supplier rationalization, improved contract compliance and ‘requisition to pay’ process improvements,” said MindTree vice president and head, Manufacturing Industry Group, Vikram Amaranath. “We believe our solution is well placed to help companies deal with the issue of controlling costs, which has become a strategic priority in the current economic environment.”

MindTree’s Manufacturing Industry Group offers consulting and IT services to automotive, discrete manufacturing, consumer products and process industries. ADHD Video Podcast Available Through iTunes

February 05, 2009 By: Ub News Press Release Category: Health/Medical/Fitness No Comments →

Ontario, Canada – “People just don’t ‘get it’ when it comes to ADHD,” Dr. Kenny Handelman explains. Too many individuals believe that attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not a “real” disorder that is more the results of poor parenting or a failure to discipline children.

Handelman, a child psychiatrist based in Ontario, Canada explains that that he is “on a mission” to change that way of thinking. He is already the author of a blog that exclusively deals with this childhood mental health disorder (www.ADDADHDblog.com), and the founder of the first fully interactive social networking site devoted exclusively for those with ADHD (www.ADHDWorld.com).

Now, Handelman is extending his advocacy role into the field of podcasts. His www.ADHD.tv is the first podcast to which people can subscribe through iTunes. Each edition of this podcast addresses an aspect of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Handelman, ultimately, sees his mission as a twofold project. Through his practice and his many web-based projects, he seeks to “improve the quality of life . . . and recognize the potential” of those with ADHD.

But he also wants those who don’t suffer with the disorder to realize that ADHD is truly a mental health issue and not merely a convenient method of school teachers to deal with unruly or disruptive students.

“No one would tell you that you didn’t have heart disease or cancer,” he explains in his podcast. “But yet many people – who really know nothing about the disorder – insist that it doesn’t even exist.”

Handelman explains that it’s only been within the last two decades at most that technology has provided us the essential look inside the working of the human brain to better understand this disorder.

In one of his first podcasts, Dr. Handelman interviews Dr. Daniel Cox of the University of Virginia concerning the incidence of accidents and individuals driving while not taking their medication for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Individuals who drive after their medication has worn off, Dr. Cox, explains via www.ADHD.tv are more likely to be involved in a car accident than those who drive and maintain their prescribed level of medications in their system.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is one of the most common disorders of childhood. Its symptoms include impulsivity, the inability to concentrate or focus on tasks at hand, as well as hyperactivity.

A growing global health problem, ADHD affects as many as seven percent of the total childhood population worldwide. In addition, more than 60 percent of these individuals carry the disorder with them into adulthood.

Handelman regularly produces a new video podcast at www.adhd.tv.

Dr. Kenny Handelman is a psychiatrist from Ontario Canada with a special interest in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In addition to founding www.ADHDWorld.com, he also has a blog, www.ADDADHDblog.com and is the host of an online video broadcast, www.adhd.tv.

MetricStream demonstrated strong continuous momentum in 2008

February 04, 2009 By: Ub News Press Release Category: Science & Technology No Comments →

MetricStream demonstrated strong continuous momentum in 2008, extends market leadership for enterprise GRC and quality management solutions

MetricStream announced a strong and successful 2008, winning several new enterprise customers, releasing innovative product enhancements and winning industry recognition. This cemented its leadership position in the market for Enterprise GRC and Quality Management Solutions.

The company reported over 100% growth from its industry-leading GRC offerings. The momentum in 2008 was driven by the acquisition of several blue chip customers across energy & utilities, banking and financial services, food and life sciences and discrete and hi-tech manufacturing sectors among others. These wins were primarily due to MetricStream’s GRC platform-based approach and the maturity, ease-of-use and configurability of the solutions. Prominent new customers included several large energy & utility companies, premier financial institutions and many Fortune 1000 companies. MetricStream also acquired a number of new customers in the Middle East and Europe, complementing the revenue growth in North America.

“The economic crisis of 2008 has sensitized corporations to the strategic importance of effective risk and compliance management and we are entering an era of tighter regulatory control and global consolidation,” said Shellye Archambeau, CEO of MetricStream. “As a result, there is an increasing interest in MetricStream’s offerings that enable an integrated, platform-based approach to GRC and Quality Management.”

Other key accomplishments in the year include:

1. In 2008, a number of MetricStream customers continued to expand their usage of the MetricStream platform into areas beyond the scope of initial deployments. For example, a Fortune 500 customer extended the MetricStream platform to automate over 10 major areas to address governance, compliance with internal and regulatory standards, risk management, supply chain management and quality management across its 80 sites. Such usage clearly illustrates the strategic value of choosing a platform-based technology for GRC and Quality Management solutions as customers realize higher return on their investment in the long-run.

2. The year 2008 brought exceptional industry recognition for the company as the analyst community highlighted the strategic approach and compelling value of MetricStream’s solutions in their reports. Gartner positioned MetricStream in the Leaders’ Quadrant in its report “Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Governance, Risk and Compliance Platforms (EGRC)”. In addition, MetricStream was also named as a “Cool Vendor” in a separate Gartner report titled “Cool Vendors in Compliance and Risk Management, 2008”. Gartner’s recognition followed Forrester naming MetricStream as a “Leader” in the Forrester Wave report on Enterprise Governance, Risk and Compliance Platforms. The Forrester report highlighted MetricStream’s flexible platform and strong capabilities in all core GRC areas. AMR Research ranked MetricStream in the “sweet spot” category assigned to vendors that “demonstrated high expertise through customer deployment, reference quality, and heritage” in its report “The Governance, Risk Management, and Compliance (GRC) Landscape, Part 2: Software’s Integral Role in GRC Automation”.

3. MetricStream’s ComplianceOnline.com, the community-driven portal, continued to disseminate best practices to thousands of GRC professionals through online training and content adding over 350 new courses to its expansive repository of courses. The portal traffic and interest grew to attract a couple of million users who visited the site looking for information, training and community interaction.

4. MetricStream successfully hosted and participated in a number of premiere forums and industry associations advocating GRC as a key component of business strategy, demonstrating the company’s thought leadership. This included MetricStream’s chairman joining government leaders, policy makers and business executives at the Horasis Global Business Meeting in Barcelona, Spain and the Boao Forum for Asia (BFA) Annual Conference in China. The CEO participated in several national initiatives around education, clean-tech and transportation policies. A MetricStream CFO hosted panel discussion on risk management drew an overwhelming response with executives from several hundred Fortune 1000 companies, including 20 of the top 25 global banks, participating in the discussion on how best to tackle the current financial turmoil and avoid such crisis in the future. MetricStream was also ranked tenth in Deloitte\’s Technology Fast 50 Program for Silicon Valley Software and IT Companies showing the strength, vision and tenacity to succeed in today’s competitive technology environment. In addition, the Open Compliance and Ethics Group (OCEG) named MetricStream as a Charter Member.

5. MetricStream also introduced many critical product innovations in 2008 particularly in the new releases of the MetricStream Enterprise GRC Platform and Compliance Management application that has been designed to manage compliance with multiple regulations across complex organizational structures through a common framework. The year also saw significant upgrades to several core MetricStream applications that support critical GRC and Quality Management processes such as Compliance Management, Internal Audits, Risk Management, Policy and Procedure Management, Loss Management, Corrective Actions and Supplier Quality Management. From a functional perspective, MetricStream expanded its applications focus to emerging areas including Green Compliance, Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S).

“The year 2008 was a marquee year for MetricStream,” said Gaurav Kapoor, CFO and General Manager of MetricStream. “MetricStream has established itself as a leading brand in the GRC solutions marketplace and the robust growth in our customer base has set the stage for a strong 2009 and beyond.”
